Supporting Existing Health Systems: Responding to a Dengue Fever outbreak on Fais Island, Yap

Problem
Yap Department of Health discovered a Dengue Fever Outbreak in the small island community of Fais. An immediate response by the community was necessary to stem the spread of the virus via mosquitos. Unfortunately, the community and the department did not have access or ability to qucikly purchase mosquito repellent.

What we did to help
Oceania Community Health stepped in to quickly purchase the needed mosquito repellent for the island of Fais. This enabled the Yap Department of Health response team to provide the repellent during their initial assessment. Since the team went in to Fais on March 22, 2007 there has been no further cases of Dengue Fever in the outbreak. Hopefully the mosquito repellent played a small role in limiting the spread of the virus.
